Similar to the way astrology and personality types can reveal a lot about you, so can numbers. Welcome to the field of numerology, where making calculations based on your birth date can reveal digits indicating your Life Path, Destiny and Master numbers. Though it sounds complicated, it couldn't be more simple. Below, I've spoken with two numerology experts about how to do the math and interpret the number's meaning in a quick numerology 101.
Meet the Experts -
Sunaree Ko is a tarot and numerology specialist, and the CEO of TarotCards.io, an AI-powered tarot reading platform designed to make intuitive guidance accessible to everyone.
Kamlesh Kumar Trivedi is an astrologer and numerologist at Nebula. Trivedi has over 20 years of experience decoding the sacred language of numbers. He has also studied Western and Vedic astrology, tarot, psychic studies and Prashna Jyotisha (horary astrology).
What Is Numerology?
"Numerology is a mystical study of numbers and its influence on our lives, based on the belief that all numbers have a vibrational meaning," Ko explains. While there are several different numbers (Life Path, Destiny, Master) and many applications, from personality and career to romantic pairing, I'll be focusing on the basics—how to calculate a Life Path number, and what it says about you.
Numerology operates on the premise that numbers can influence personality and, ultimately, how you move through the world. "Consider it a cosmic instruction manual, a guide written by the universe in the language of mathematics," Ko says.
The practice is ancient, and one of the main branches stems from the teachings of a man you might know: Pythagoras, Greek philosopher and mathematician. "The Pythagorean system explores the relationships between numbers, geometric principles, and their metaphysical meanings," Trivedi adds.
The Numbers, Explained
Just as there are 12 zodiac signs or 16 Myers-Briggs personality types, in numerology, numbers range from one to nine. Below, the numerologists explain each number's significance.
1/The Leader: energy, drive, independence, aspiration, innovation
2/The Diplomat: sensitivity, emotional depth, teamwork, consideration
3/The Creator: intellectual, communicator, expressive, social, creative
4/The Builder: stability, intensity, discipline
5/The Adventurer: emotional exploration, freedom, versatility
6/The Nurturer: love, intimacy, responsibility, empathy
7/The Seeker: joy, inner freedom, reflection, wisdom, intuition
8/The Achiever: discipline, material success, power
9/The Humanitarian: spiritual growth, enlightenment, personal liberation, compassion, fulfillment
There are also three special Master numbers: 11, 22 and 33. "Master numbers occur when your Life Path calculation results in repeated digits. These numbers are not reduced and carry intense spiritual significance," Trivedi says. They are listed below:
11: Intuition, spiritual insight, leadership
22: Master builder, big vision, practical goals
33: Compassion, healing, spiritual teaching
Calculating Your Life Path Number
I get it. Whenever I need to do any math, all the numerals coalesce into soup. Luckily, calculating your Life Path number is pretty simple. It's the most important number, because, Trivedi says, "the Life Path Number holds a unique place because it's directly connected to your life's purpose. It reveals your core personality, natural talents, key challenges, and the overall direction of your life."
The calculation is as follows:
1. Reduce your birth date to a single number. You do this by adding all the digits together until you have one digit.
Example: 5/17/1965
5 + 1 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 6 + 5 = 34
3 + 4 = 7
Your Life Path number is 7/The Seeker.
If you have repeated numerals (for example, one of the Master numbers, or something like 444), you don't need to simplify them to a single digit.
"Repeated numbers (111, 444) serve as celestial nudge," Ko says, noting that this can often lead to insight on areas of life that feel stagnant.
Time to whip out that calculator.
